UPDATE from Regional competitions:
We have been to our regional competitions on Nov. 27th at PEEL and Dec. 4th at HALTON and we have FANTASTIC NEWS!!
PEEL
The Sentinels (#3663) and The Ferocious Femurs (#3669) were the two teams that we took to Tomke n Rd. Middle School for the Peel Regional Competition. It was an awesome day, lots of sharing, questions and excitement!
The veteran team, The Sentinels were given 2 callbacks for their presentations (a chance for the other set of judges to see them) and had a great response from the judges with lots of questions on their Sentinel System.
They also had a terrific day with their robot, scoring the highest points on the table for the day with 375/400 points and winning the robot performance elimination round! They were also awarded GRAND CHAMPIONS for the day, keeping their record of "Peel Champions" now 3 years in a row.
The big suprise for the day was how well our rookie junior team did winning the robot design award! They had some problems with th e robot during the table rounds but obviously impressed the judges with their robots design, function and programming.
Imagine our suprise when they announced the 4 teams advancing to the Ontario Provincial Championship in January as 2nd place, The Ferocious Femurs (our rookie team) and 1st place, The Sentinels (our veteran team). We are all very proud of you guys! Good luck in January!

HALTON
Just one week later, exhausted but full of anticipation, John and I were at the Halton competition Dec. 4th at Holy Trinity C.S.S. with the Shock Squad
(#7887) and the Cartilage Kings (#7880). Another great day was had by all, I know some of you stopped in to see what was going on!
The veteran team, the Shock Squad had an awesome day with 3 callbacks on their project, robot and teamwork presentations. Any callback is met with great excitement so to get all 3 was stupendous! The robot had some issues for this senior team and so they did not do as well as they have done here at E-Bots in practice, but that is something the veteran team has learned well over the years. They did shine, and were awarded the GRAND CHAMPIONS for Halton, keeping their record for winning at Halton/Peel completely intact now for 3 years. (this year Halton and Peel split into 2 seperate regions)
The Cartilage Kings, our rookie team at this event had just the BEST day with their robot! Every qualifier had them reprogramming, debugging and scoring more points! In fact they WON the elimination robot round beating all teams with the highest score on the table! What an incredible turn of events, they actually beat the veteran senior team with their robot!
While they were in line receiving their trophy, they were announced as the winners of the robot design award, winning the 2 prestigious robot awards for the day! Sadly they are not advancing to the provincial competition in January as their project, teamwork and robot were not balanced enough in points to earn them a spot. But what dominators on the robot!!!
The Shock Squad was announced as the 1st place finishers for the provincial entries. Congratulations to both teams and good luck Squad in January.

We have a wonderful video of the Cartilage Kings FLL experience that we will post here when we find some music for it! Stay tuned......
Below is the initial FLL posting from September:
We started our FLL season late August/early Sept. with a BIG challenge ahead! We have 28 children on 4 FLL teams! We certainly have our "coaching" cut out for us!
We have identified the 4 teams as 2 senior teams and 2 junior teams, in truth they are all in the same age group of 9-14, but the senior team is comprised of 6 children who are on year 3 with us and 8 who were on a team last year. The junior team are all new to FLL with us.
The senior team are meeting on Saturdays from 2pm-9pm plus any extra days we can give them and the juniors meet on Wed. from 4:30-7pm + 2 project Sundays.
The robot challenge is an interesting one this year as the tasks are
tied in with the subject of Body Forward....they have to repair a bone and put a cast on it, separate red and white blood cells, dispense pills, etc....all in LEGO! If you are interested in seeing the challenges, check out this link here.
Challenges are progressing from all teams on the fll tables and to make it easier we purchased a 2nd mat to give the teams more room to work on their robots.
The Body Forward research project is an interesting one and encompasses so many possible choices. The link to the project is here if you want to read about it.
Research project topics have now been picked for all 4 teams and we are excited about the ideas the children have come up with. They are researching some interesting body parts or functions, such as diabetes, deep vein thrombosis, knee cartilage, and osteosarcoma! They have identified problems within each and possible innovative solutions that can be applied to repair, heal or improve the conditions or treatments.
Competitions for our 4 teams will be taking place on Saturday November 27th at Tomken Road Middle School in Mississauga (8:30-3) and Saturday December 4th at Holy Trinity C.S.S. (timeTBA) in Oakville.
Anyone is invited, they are open to the public if you want to come and cheer them on! We will have one team from junior and senior at each event!
Follow along with the senior teams on their weekly blogs to catch up on their latest developments.
